Reviews

Barry Smith's collection of original songs and tunes are predominantly gentle in nature and melodic in character. Five of the songs form part of the Sophies Dance cycle set in a Yorkswollen town in the 1960s. There are also 3 sets of irish dance tunes and 2 originally arranged trad songs.

Barry sings, plays guitar, whistle and wooden and metal flutes. Favorite tracks are Bonny Bessie Logan-just voice, guitar and flute, simple but effective, tunes Wharfedale Jig/Lilting Banshee and Far Away From Here which features some stunning ensemble singing from Calderdale Voices.

The CD gives you a pretty good idea of Barry's abilities as a composer, performer and arranger and the album is well worth a listen.

An album containing plenty of variety in mood and texture which, showcases Barry's considerable songwriting talent and playing. Gently attractive songs, tackled in an appealing manner with inventive arrangements. Barry has a pleasant voice and is a pretty good whistle & flute player - overall this CD is a fair enough representation of Barry's strengths.
